Information

Welcome to the Planets (tm) , an educational CD-ROM produced by NASA's Planetary Data System, contains over 200 selected images and captions acquired over 25 years of NASA planetary exploration.

The images on this CD-ROM cover all of the planets in the solar system including the Earth and Moon, as well as images of comets, asteroids, meteorites, lunar samples, spacecraft, and many moons of other planets. The images on Welcome to the Planets are in GIF format to allow the user to display them using GIF image viewers. Accompanying sound files are also available for the image captions, so that they can be read aloud by the computer.

The primary intent of Welcome to the Planets is to provide teachers with an overview of planetary exploration, at approximately a high school or college level. However, the expectation is that teachers will use this CD-ROM at a variety of grade levels. Welcome to the Planets can be used alone as an introduction to planetary science, or as a tool for solving problems in conjunction with exercises written by a teacher.

The newest version of Welcome to the Planets (Version 1.5) works on both MacIntosh and Windows platforms. Also new is a curriculum guide to help teachers design lessons around the information contained on the CD-ROM. The curriculum guide may be read from within the program using Adobe Acrobat Reader version 2.1. Macintosh and Windows versions of these readers are provided on the CD-ROM.

  1. Macintosh Platforms

A multimedia Macintosh program, WTP.MAC, on the CD-ROM is designed for use on Macintosh computers. (Operation requires System 7.0 or higher, 8MB RAM, and a 640x480 screen with 8-bit color.)

A multimedia DOS/Windows program, WTP.EXE, is included in the WTP folder found in the top level directory of the CD-ROM. (Operation requires a 640x480 VGA display screen.)

Alternatively, you may install the program onto your hard drive by using PCINSTAL.EXE. Please see the readme documents on the CD-ROM.

  3. Web Browsers

An hypertext file, WELCOME.HTM which is on the CD-ROM, can be used with any web browser software on any platform. Web browser software is not on the CD-ROM.
