Voyager 1 view of Jupiter's Great Red Spot and surrounding areas in the southern hemisphere, taken less than 18 hours before closest approach. Centered just west of the Red Spot, at 22 S, 95 W, this image shows the turbulent region around the Red Spot and one of the large white ovals beneath it. The frame was taken by the wide angle camera with a violet filter and is about 60,000 km across. North is at 1:00. (Voyager 1, 16367.21)
