Phobos - Viking 1 Orbiter
Eastern hemisphere, anti-Mars side of Phobos from 480 km
Viking 1 Orbiter image of the Martian moon Phobos.
This image was taken from about 600 km on orbit 242
on 19 February 1977, the first encounter of Viking
with Phobos. The terminator runs along the anti-Mars
longitude (180 W) and most of the eastern hemisphere
of this side is visible. The South pole is just off
the lower center of the frame. The portion shown
here is roughly 18 km from top to bottom.
