Color image of the Simpson Desert in Australia on Earth

Earth
Galileo color composite image of the Simpson Desert in south-central Australia. At lower left is seasonal Lake Eyre, the lowest point in Australia, which is nearly dry at the time this image was taken. At lower right is the greenish Lake Blanche. The image was taken about 2 hours after Galileo's closest approach to Earth on 8 December 1990 from 56,000 km. The image is roughly 450 km wide by 550 km high and was produced by combining exposures taken through the red, green, and violet filters. (Galileo, P-37331)
