Mosaic Image of the Saddle of Eros

Eros
This mosaic of NEAR Shoemaker images shows the "saddle" region of Near-Earth asteroid 433 Eros. The images were taken on 5 September 2000 from 100 km. The western part of the saddle is facing the Sun. The high angle lighting minimizes shading variations over most of the image, but emphasizes brightness variations, exposing the bright mottling on the surface. Features as small as about 10 meters can be resolved in this image. 433 Eros is about 33 x 13 x 13 km in size. This is a mosaic of images 0143581009, 0143581071, 0143581133, and 0143581195.
