Mathilde - NEAR

First Image of Mathilde

Mathilde
This is the first image of asteroid 253 Mathilde returned by the NEAR spacecraft during its flyby. The image was taken on 27 June 1997 from a distance of 1800 km. The part of the asteroid in the frame is roughly 59 km across, imaged at 230 meters/pixel at highest resolution. Lighting is from the upper right. Note the heavily cratered surface and the large shadow to the left which is a huge impact crater possibly 10 km deep. (NEAR Mathilde 199706271400)
