Earth - NEAR
Antarctica and South America
This false color image centered on Antarctica was taken by
the NEAR spacecraft shortly after closest approach on its
Earth flyby. The image was taken from a distance of about
220,000 km at roughly 15:20 UT on 23 January 1998. The
image was produced from pictures taken through blue, green
and infrared filters. The southern portion of South America
can be seen at the upper right, with the red areas
representing vegetation and the browner areas desert.
Storm clouds and sea ice surround the continent of
Antarctica, which is roughly 4500 km from top to bottom.
The smallest feature visible in the full image is about
15 km in size.
