This data set consists of spectral image cubes generated by systematic processing of the experiment data records (EDRs) acquired by the Galileo Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS). The raw EDR data have been reorganized into a band sequential form, converted to spectral radiance units (based on ground and in-flight calibration of the NIMS instrument), and (in most cases) projected onto the target. The calibration and geometric information used to produce the cubes are the best available at the time of processing, but are subject to further refinements in the future. Such refinements may lead to improved and reissued data products.
Spectral image cubes consist of a series of "images" of the target, each in a different wavelength, in ascending wavelength order. They also consist of a set of spectra over the target area, each at a specific line and sample, each spectrum describing a small portion of the target. Cubes enable the data to be analyzed spatially (an image at a time) or spectrally (a spectrum at a time) or in a more complex fashion.
Each cube contains an attached PDS/ISIS label and follows PDS and ISIS "qube" object standards. The core of the NIMS cubes in these data contains scaled 16 bit radiance values, the result of applying the NIMS calibration to 10 bit raw data numbers. The scaling parameters for each band as well as the wavelenths and other band-dependent quantities are in the label.
Browse images of the cubes are provided in the form of a secondary hardcopy "mask", which contains a summary RGB image (or footprint plot for unprojected cubes, or tubes), half a dozen selected spectra keyed to it, various histograms, and annotation.
All documentation pertaining to NIMS operations and/or data as well as details of the CD-ROM and file structure are resident on the discs.
The cubes can be accessed using the ISIS (Integrated Software for Imaging Spectrometers) system, currently available for VMS and UNIX (Sun OS and DEC-alpha). ISIS includes software for generating, manipulating, and displaying cubes. Information on acquiring ISIS for data analysis of NIMS EDRs and cubes can be found on the disc.
Simple multiplatform software (NASAview) for displaying the cube data will be included on future volumes in this series, but is not present on the first disc. Information about licensing NASA view is available on the world wide web at:
http://pds.jpl.nasa.gov/license.htmlGeneric image display software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop(tm)) can also be used to display the images resident in the cubes. Detailed instructions for this are provided in the documentation.
The browse images on the discs can be viewed as well with older software used for viewing PDS images (e.g., Image4PDS, IMDISP, etc.).
The discs can be ordered singly or in sets. Information as to the content of the individual discs and ordering information is available at:
