This data set holds the Viking 2 Orbiter Infrared Thermal Mapper (IRTM) Mars Atmospheric Water Detection (MAWD) Experiment Data Records (EDR's) on CD-WO. The CDs were created as part of NASA's Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT). The EDR's are measurements of solar infrared radiation reflected from the surface at spectral intervals coincident with the wavelength of water-vapor absorption lines in the 1.4-micrometer band.
The input data for this CD volume were originally archived on 274 7-track magnetic tapes which were copied directly to the CD's. The 7-track data in this dataset was padded. The 6 bit characters were padded to 8 bits by placing zeroes into the 2 high order bits. For more detail on the exact file structure, consult the COPY_LOG file accompanying each tape.
The file IRT_INFO.TXT is located on each CD in the series. It correlates the tape ID with available descriptions of the tapes' contents. Accompanying each tape on the disc, there is a log file which documents SDDPT processing history.
This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. Persons interested in ordering these data should contact the NSSDC person listed for this data set.
This is SPDSS ID 75-083A-03C, volumes VO2_1001 - VO2_1002
