This data set consists of pictures produced by differencing two Lander pictures. The major purpose of picture differencing is to search for changes at the Lander sites. The sequence of events leading to the production of a differencing image is as follows: (1) the two images are vertically and horizontally "positioned" relative to each other, (2) the numerical difference is taken on a pixel-by-pixel basis, (3) the result is biased to the mid-range of the gray scale, and (4) the result is contrast stretched over the brightness range. The processing conventions are such that if the result is brighter than mid-range gray then the later picture is brighter than the earlier one. For a further description of these images, see p. 52 in "The Mosaics of Mars," NASA Contractor Report 3326, 1980, by E. C. Levinthal and K. L. Jones. These data have not been received at NSSDC as of the date of th document.
