This data set contains Mariner 9 Ultraviolet Spectrometer Final Supplementary Experiment Data Records (SEDR) copied from 7- and 9-track magnetic tapes onto CD-WO as part of the Science Digital Data Preservation Task. The original tapes were numbers CUV-701 to COV-711 (7-track) and CUV-901 to CUV-906 (9-track). CUV-907 is listed as missing. The data were copied from a collection of tapes that, in most cases, were at least 15-20 years old. Each CD-ROM disc has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs).
The complete set of UVS EDR and SEDR final data have been processed through UVS SAP - a program which would: 1) Average the data in specified bands of individual spectra and output to printer and mag tape (BAN tapes, location unknown), or 2) correlate UVS spectra and SEDR data, interpolating if necessary and output spectra and SEDR data to printer and mag tape (MRG) tapes, data set code 71-051A-0069.) A special feature of this program was the capability to validate the DAS times associated with UV spectra received in real-time and correct them if necessary. The products of this process are the UVS SAP tapes, data set code 71-051A-0053.
This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. In general, these data are stored at NSSDC for archive, not distribution, purposes. The data are not always in a readily accessible form. In order to request this data, please talk to the NSSDC contact person listed for this data set.
This is SDDPT data set code 71_051A_0061, volume ID M71_3101.
