This data set contains Mariner 9 Master Data Records copied from 7-track magnetic tapes onto CD-WO as part of the Science Digital Data Preservation Task. The data were copied from a collection of 2000 tapes that, in most cases, were at least 15-20 years old. According to the MM '71 Science Data Team Library Final Report, there were originally 2043 tapes, so there may be some tapes missing. The original 6-bit data was converted to 8 bits by replacing the first (parity) bit with two zero bits. The 7-track data was originally written in "snaked" format with attached EBCDIC VICAR labels in front of the data. Accompanying each tape on the disc, there is a log file which documents SDDPT processing history. The file MD_INFO.TXT correlates the tape ID with available descriptions of the tapes' contents and the tracks. Each CD-ROM disc has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs).
This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. Persons interested in ordering these data should contact the NSSDC person listed for this data set.
This is SDDPT data set code 71-051A-0006, volume ID M71_4001.
