Availability: Data Available from Experimenter
Prepared by the principal investigators, this data set consists of a series of computer produced movies of Dynamics Explorer 2 NACS, LANG and WATS measurements. The movies cover the entire 18 month lifetime of DE-2 between August 1981 and February 1983. The first movie shows the variability of atomic Oxygen density, molecular Nitrogen density, Helium density, and Argon density (all from the NACS instrument) over geographic latitude (-90 0 90 0 -90). The second movie shows LANG electron temperature and density over invariant latitude. The third movie shows two components of the neutral wind measured by WATS over geographic latitude. The last movie shows WATS neutral gas temperature and LANG electron temperature over geographic latitude. As the orbit precesses in local time and perigee moves in latitude one can observe the sometimes smooth, but often drastic changes in response to magnetic activity. The movie series was presented by R. F. Theis, L. H. Brace, A. E. Hedin, and N. W. Spencer at a poster session during the 1987 AGU Spring Meeting in Baltimore (title: The Global Distribution of Geophysical Parameters from the DE-2 Satellite: A Movie). The data set was generated on 16mm film and may be obtained from the principal investigator. It is identified under the IDs: 81-070B-03B, -04B, and -09B, indicating the instruments whose data are displayed in the movies. An identical version is available on one VHS video cartridge from NSSDC (81-070B-03A, -04A, -09A).
