Mission Name: Explorer 15The purpose of this experiment was to measure the magnitude and direction of the earth's magnetic field between 1.7 and 3.5 earth radii. The instrument was a two-axis, saturable-core fluxgate magnetometer. Each axis had a range of plus or minus 4000 nT and an accuracy of 40 nT. The magnetometer was mounted at the end of a boom to minimize the effects of spacecraft fields. Owing to the failure of the spacecraft to despin and the large uncertainty in the field measurements, the data were of little or no value for studies of the geomagnetic field.
