Mission Name: Vega 1 BalloonThe Vega Balloon Backscatter Nephelometer was a 2.0 x 5.5 x 6.5 cm box mounted on the lower section (the battery compartment) of the gondola. It was designed to measure the cloud density in the Venus atmosphere. The nephelometer consisted of a pulsed gallium arsenide light source emitting at 9300 angstroms, a PIN diode with a filter-detector to reject sunlight, transmission and recption path optics, and a thermistor to monitor internal temperatures. The box had two apertures, one for light source transmission and one for reception. The nephelometer measured a region from about 4 to 100 cm from the aperture. The absolute accuracy of the nephelometer was 10E-5/m sr and the resolution was 2.0 x 10E-6/m sr.
