Mission Name: GOES 10The Data Collection System (DCS) on the GOES-NEXT series of operational geostationary meteorological spacecraft (GOES-I through GOES-M) is designed to collect and relay meteorological data from approximately 2000 Data Collection Platforms (DCPs). The DCPs are buoys, free-floating balloons, and remote weather stations which provide near real-time environmental data. The DCP information is used to provide warnings and forecasts of weather events such as tornadoes, tsunamis, and topical cyclones. The GOES DCS receives the signal from a DCP and then retransmits the data to the ground for processing. The DCS can also relay an interrogated signal from the ground station to the DCPs to activate the platform at specific times.
