Mission Name: Beagle 2The X-ray Flourescence Spectrometer is designed to obtain the major, minor, and trace element composition of samples on Mars. Samples are bombarded with alpha particles from a 244Cu source producing X-rays. The energy spectrum of the X-rays is measured by a XR-100T X-ray detector. The primary goals are to measure potassium concentration for age-dating purposes and the major elements Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, and Fe for rock identification.
