Mission Name: New Horizons Pluto Kuiper Belt FlybyThe Solar Wind Analyzer around Pluto (SWAP) is a low energy plasma toroidal electrostatic analyzer and retarding potential analyzer. It is designed to measure solar wind particles in the vicinity of Pluto to determine whether Pluto has a magnetosphere and the rate of atmospheric escape. It will also be turned on periodically during the cruise phase to study the solar wind in interplanetary space. SWAP is designed to measure particles in the energy range from 0.03 to 6.5 keV with a resolution of about 1 eV for energies below 2 keV and 9% above 2 keV. The field of view is 270 x 10 degrees with deflection angles up to an additional 15 degrees. The SWAP and PEPSSI instruments make up the plasma and high energy particle spectrometer suite (PAM).
