Mission Name: Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN)The primary goal of the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer (SWIA) is to measure the solar wind ion input to the martian atmosphere. The secondary goal is to characterize basic space plasma processes around Mars. SWIA is an electrostatic analyzer which makes in-situ measurements of ion energy flux and flow velocities. It can measure energies from 5 - 25000 eV, flow velocities from 30 - 2000 km/s, and densities from 0.1 to >100 per cubic cm. The instrument field of view is 360 x 90 degrees with an angular resolution of 22.5 degrees. The basic measurement rate is once every 4 seconds, with continuous operation except during deep dips. SWIA is mounted on the MAVEN sun-facing deck.
