Intercosmos 5 was jointly assembled by Soviet and Czech scientist and was tracked by stations in the U.S.S.R., Czechoslovakia, and the German Democratic Republic. Instruments to investigate the composition and temporal variations in charged particle fluxes and to register and analyze the spectrum of low-frequency electromagnetic waves between 20 and 70 kHz were included on the spacecraft.
