Insat 2E was an Indian communications and meteorology satellite launched from Kourou, French Guiana aboard an Ariane 4 rocket. It was positioned in a geostationary orbit at 83 degrees E to serve India and the local region. It carried 17 transponders - operating in the normal C-band frequency and 5 in the lower extend C-band. Seven of the normal C-band transponders had wide beam coverage and the remaining had zonal coverage. All channels provided Edge of Coverage - Effective Isotopic Radiated Power (EOC-EIRP) of 36 dBW.
The meteorological payload consisted of a Very High Resolution Radiometer (VHRR) with 2 km resolution in visible band and 8 km resolution in the water vapor band. A Charge Coupled Device (CCD) camera operated in visible, near infrared and shortwave band with 1 km resolution.
