NSSDCA ID: PLEX-A
The Planetary Explorer series, which is in the definition phase and has not yet been authorized (as of July 1971), is intended to advance the exploration of Venus through the use of both orbiter and atmospheric probe missions. The objectives of the probe include, but are not limited to obtaining measurements related to, (1) the nature and composition of clouds, (2) the composition and structure of the atmosphere to the surface, and (3) the general circulation pattern of the atmosphere. For the orbiter, the objectives include (1) obtaining measurements of the upper atmosphere and the ionosphere, (2) studying the interaction of the solar wind with the Venus ionosphere and the magnetic field, (3) studying the atmosphere and surface by remote sensing, and (4) determining gravitational field harmonics from perturbations of the orbit. Low cost is to be emphasized, with all missions using the Delta launch vehicle. On July 1, 1971, NASA invited proposals for participation by scientists in the definition phase. These proposals are due on November 1, 1971, with selection of participants scheduled for December 15, 1971. The mission was never approved and is no longer being considered.
