NSSDCA ID: STORMST
Stormsat is a third-generation, geosynchronous satellite system dedicated to the investigation and forecasting of severe local storms, tropical cyclones, and other mesoscale phenomena. Stormsat's three-axis stabilized platform allows the highest spatial and temporal resolution and most accurate radiances yet possible in the visible, infrared, and microwave regions of the spectrum for given optics and antenna sizes. Two major instruments are being designed to accomplish these tasks -- the advanced atmospheric sounding and imaging radiometer (AASIR) and the microwave atmospheric sounding radiometer (MASR). The AASIR provides visible and infrared imagery and temperature and humidity soundings, and the MASR provides temperature and water vapor soundings, even in overcast areas.
