ISO Archiving Standards - First US Workshop - Announcement
URGENT.........URGENT..........URGENT
** VERY SHORT RESPONSE TIME NEEDED **
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
US Workshop on ISO Archiving Standards
University of Maryland Conference Center
College Park, Maryland
October 11-12, 1995
Initial Sponsor: NASA
**** Participation Request Deadline: September 22, 1995 ***
**** Notification of Acceptance: September 25, 1995 ***
PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO ANY COLLEAGUES WHO MAY BE INTERESTED. WE APOLOGIZE
TO THOSE WHO RECEIVE THIS MORE THAN ONCE.
THEME
Development of US contributions to an ISO standards effort in support of the
long term preservation of digital information obtained from observations of
the terrestrial and space environments.
RATIONALE
The rapidly growing distributed data environment is causing wide-spread
efforts at archiving digital information, but there is not a corresponding
wide-spread understanding of long-term information preservation requirements
and techniques. As a result, agencies and organizations which have a
responsibility for long-term preservation of digital information are incurring
unnecessary costs and risk substantial information loss. This standards
effort should enable commercially supported archiving services/software and
should reduce long-term archiving costs.
MEETING OBJECTIVES
- Begin the formation of an active US group, composed of Government,
Industry, and Academia, contributing to the development
of ISO archiving standards beginning with a Reference Model.
- Advance proposals on the requirements, organization and content of an
Archiving Reference Model for consolidation into a US contribution for
the first ISO TC20/CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems)
Panel 2 Archive Standards meeting scheduled for 26-27 October, 1995 in
Oxford, England.
- Provide a forum for the presentation of ideas, issues, and experiences
concerning the long term archiving of digital information and the ability
of customers to use that information.
MEETING APPROACH
- It is recognized that this first US meeting has been scheduled with a very
short lead time and that some potential participants will not be able to
attend on such short notice. Results of the meeting and schedules will be
made widely available (including WEB access) to encourage contributions
electronically and in future meetings. The level of response will help
establish future meeting arrangements. However, note that a very aggressive
international schedule has been established leading to a draft international
standard (DIS) Reference Model in the Spring of 1997 and the US effort will
need to be just as aggressive.
- Following on-site registration, there will be a presentation on logistics
and then a review and updating of the proposed agenda.
- The current agenda calls for an overview presentation on the ISO archiving
standards effort including the phased implementation approach and the current
schedules.
- Following will be a presentation on a draft Archiving Reference Model to
serve as a focus for developing a US input to the 26-27 October international
meeting. A preliminary outline of such a Reference Model and some supporting
text is attached to this announcement.
- The remainder of the first day will be largely available for presentations
by participants (15 minutes per) to introduce their basis and objectives for
participating, their comments on the draft Reference Model and/or alternate
drafts of a Reference Model, and any related material they believe relevant to
the overall effort.
- We will identify 2 or 3 subgroups, and who will be where, for the start of
the second day's session.
- Dinner reservations are being made for the evening of the 11th.
Participants will pay for their individual meals.
- The second day will start with the subgroup breakouts and continue to 3 pm.
- At 3 pm we will reconvene in plenary session to get subgroup reports and to
develop consensus on a US contribution to the international meeting. We will
also make plans for subsequent meetings and modes of communication.
PARTICIPATION REQUEST INFORMATION
