Discussion Items: Summary Only
Paul gave some opening remarks. He explained the need for all the security
which we had encountered; a great deal of the laboratory's work is for the
military.
OVERVIEW OF ARCHIVING ACTIVITIES SINCE THIRD US WORKSHOP
- Don provided an overview (Item 1) of what has been happening since the
last meeting. His presentation covered three points:
- Breakout of functions with a "Process Box (Item 2) which Randy
had developed
- Version 4 of draft Reference Model which was the version
discussed at the International Workshop (IWS). He itemized
the numerous comments from those discussions (Item 3).
- International workshop itself (Item 4) at which there was broad
international participation
- He reviewed the results of the French National Data workshop
- He reviewed Claude Huc's paper "Toward a metadata model" (Item
5), indicating he felt it is an interesting paper. He also felt
more of the metadata perspective should be included in the
Reference Model.
DATA ARCHIVE REFERENCE MODEL VERSION 5
- Both Lou and Don reviewed in detail (with extended discussion) the current
version 5 which basically included most of the comments from the
International Workshop's sessions on Data Archives. (Items 1 and 6)
COMMISSION ON PRESERVATION AND ACCESS
- The final report from their Task Force on Archiving Digital Information
(Item 8) was discussed.
- It was decided that we need to write a letter to the Commission on
Preservation and Access (not to the Task Force).
- Bob will draft a letter which is to introduce our activity to the
Commission, show cognizance of their activity and indicate how our efforts
are different but complementary
