NOST News: Results of Fall 2001 International Standards Workshop

By Donald Sawyer and John Garrett

Panel 2 of the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) and ISO Technical Committee 20, Subcommittee 13, held its fall 2001 workshop at the French space facility (Centre National D’Etudes Spatiales) in Toulouse, France from October 22-30, 2001.

Significant progress since the last workshop (see article at http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nssdc_news/june01/nost_news.html) was made on a number of standards efforts. The three-day archiving session was attended by participants from a variety of space and non-space organizations, including the Research Libraries Group, the French National Library, and the U.S. National Archive and Records Administration. The updated “Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS)” http://www.ccsds.org/documents/pdf/CCSDS-650.0-R-2.pdf had been released for two-month review by the Space agencies and about 20 comments had been received. These were discussed by the panel and proposed dispositions given. This review was to have been conducted in parallel with the ISO review, however the ISO review was delayed and is expected to start in November. No major comments are expected and therefore full ISO/CCSDS standard status should be reached this year.

A concept paper entitled “Producer-Archive Interface Methodology” that lays out a set of steps for the interaction between the data producer and the archive was reviewed and needed changes were identified. The next version will be a draft CCSDS standard (White Book) that we encourage all archives and projects to review. U.S. efforts on this can be tracked, and you can register to participate, by going to the US ISO archiving site at http://ssdoo.gsfc.nasa.gov/nost/isoas/us/overview.html.

The Data Entity Dictionary Specification Language (DEDSL)-XML/DTD had been reviewed by the Space agencies and all comments received were resolved at the workshop. This document is now ready for release as a final CCSDS standard (Blue Book). It provides a standard way to express the semantics of data such as names, definitions, data types used, and other attributes. It also allows for users to extend the attributes available for descriptions of data.

CCSDS held an XML workshop, hosted by NOST and Raytheon, during the summer (see article at http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nssdc_news/sept01/xml_nost.html) One thrust with broad interest is the packaging of data using XML. Panel 2, which has the ISO packaging standard ISO 12175 (1994), extended the summer workshop XML packaging effort by considering a possible OAISInformation Package. A revised XML schema description was produced. An editor, from NASA, for a draft ‘packaging standard’ was also assigned.
