Definitive WIND Magnetic Field Data Available at NSSDC

Dr. Ronald Lepping (principal investigator of the Magnetic Field Investigation [MFI], the magnetometer experiment on NASA's WIND spacecraft) and James Byrnes (chief software engineer of MFI) have provided an initial 14 months (05/01/95-06/30/96) of 3-sec, 1-min, and 1-hr MFI data to NSSDC for archival. Later data will be archived on an on-going basis. These data in Common Data Format (CDF) and ASCII formats and their supporting documentation and software (Fortran, C, Interactive Data Language [IDL]) will be available from the Space Physics Catalog (SPyCAT)/NASA Data Archive and Distribution Service (NDADS) and from the Coordinated Data Analysis Web (CDAWeb) as further discussed below.

The WIND spacecraft.

The archival products include the following:

• CDF files with the full set of 3-s, 1-m, and hourly averages magnetic field component in geocentric solar ecliptic (GSE) and geocentric solar magnetospheric (GSM) coordinate, field strength, the root mean squares of the component and field strength, spacecraft position at 1-m and 1-h resolution and other important telemetric information.

• ASCII files containing the columns that are of primary interest:

  The data have been ingested into NDADS. All the information including the data, documentation, and software will be available at about the time this newsletter is in print for public access through
