IMAGE Data Server Available at NSSDC

The NASA IMAGE (Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration) spacecraft was launched March 25, 2000 to study plasma and energetic particle populations in the Earth’s magnetosphere/ ionosphere system with a set of remote sensing instruments. IMAGE and its instrument complement are well described at http://image.gsfc.nasa.gov/.

The IMAGE Science and Mission Operations Center (SMOC) generates a series of data products and provides these to IMAGE investigators and to NSSDC. These products are also described at the IMAGE Web site. The primary products are a UDF (Universal Data Format) product being ingested to the NSSDC permanent archive and to
ftp://nssdcftp.gsfc.nasa.gov/spacecraft_data/image through NSSDC’s DIOnAS system (see http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nssdc_news/dec00/image.html) and a higher level CDF (Common Data Format) product accessible through CDAWeb at http://cdaWeb.gsfc.nasa.gov/.

The FTP-accessible UDF products are instrument-specific daily files tarred and zipped over all the variously processed UDF data sets for a given instrument. NSSDC is preparing a data dissemination capability for individual IMAGE UDF data sets. These data sets are generated at NSSDC by running the “IMAGE UDF Archive” software against the SMOC-provided tarred/zipped files. Mr. Chris Gurgiolo (initially at Southwest Research Institute and more recently at Bitterroot Basic Research, Inc.) has been the lead for development of the IMAGE UDF Archive software and the complementary client software used to access data held in the IMAGE archive. Bill Lawson has been the lead at NSSDC for installing the archive software and populating the IMAGE archive with IMAGE data sets.

These data are accessible at http://image.gsfc.nasa.gov then follow the IMAGE software archive link. This Web site provides documentation needed to download, install, and configure the client software. The client software is a set of tools that allow the user to maintain a local collection of IMAGE data, automatically retrieve data electronically from one or more remote archives, and analyze data with a UDF plot program. The client software is configured using the information below for the archive server running at lewes.gsfc.nasa.gov. end of paragraph mark
