ADC Announces New CD-ROM

Volume 12, Number 1, March 1996
by Gail Schneider and David Leisawitz

During the 187th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), which was held January 14-18, 1996, in San Antonio, Texas, the Astronomical Data Center (ADC) announced the availability of its new Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume II CD-ROM. In the succeeding month 437 copies of the CD-ROM were distributed, including 91 from the Astrophysics Data Facility (ADF) exhibit booth at the AAS meeting, where several services were demonstrated: the NASA Data Archive and Distribution Service (NDADS), the Web Interface for Searching Archival Research Data (WISARD), the Astrophysics Multi-Spectral Archive Search Engine (AMASE), and the ADC. The ADC's Internet service can be reached at URL

The catalogs contained on this CD-ROM cover a variety of subjects and were selected because they are large or frequently requested. For example, the CD-ROM contains the large Durchmusterung catalogs that did not fit on Volume I and the large Hipparcos and Tycho catalogs. There are two versions of this CD-ROM, one in ASCII format (Volume II, Number 1) and one in Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) (Volume II, Number 2).

The catalogs are documented according to the standard adopted by NASA's ADC and the Centre de Donnees astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) in France. Each catalog was checked for proper data format, units, ranges, and ordering consistent with that specified in an accompanying readme file. During the verification process any errors that were found in the data or documentation were corrected.

(From left to right by row) Joseph Lyu, David Leisawitz, Nancy Roman, Gail Schneider; (row 2) Julie Anne Watko, Paul Kuin; (row 3) James Blackwell; (row 4) and James Gass all worked on the development and production of the Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume II CD-ROM.

Included in each CD-ROM are software tools useful for browsing and/or extracting data from the catalogs. The discs conform to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9660 standard and have a simple layout with, at the highest level, separate directories for the catalogs, software, and additional documentation. The list of catalogs on the Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume II CD-ROM can be viewed at

The cost of each CD-ROM is $10.00 plus a $5.00 shipping/handling fee for each foreign order. Each version may be purchased separately. Payment may be made using VISA, Mastercard, American Express, check, or money order payable to HUGHES STX CORPORATION in U.S. DOLLARS on a U.S. BANK. Requesters who wish to pay by credit card can FAX the NSSDC Coordinated Request and User Support Office (CRUSO) at (301) 286-1635 and should ensure that name and FAX number are clearly identified. Requesters who wish to pay by check or money order can mail their requests to the NSSDC CRUSO. (See NSSDC Help Desk.) If the CD-ROM will be used for NASA-funded research, requesters will not be charged if they provide the NSSDC CRUSO with their NASA grant or contract number. The NSSDC maintains a World Wide Web version of its NSSDC CD-ROM Catalog at URL The catalog lists and describes all of the CD-ROMs distributed by the NSSDC.
