Telephone (2l3) 354-5011 PHOTO CAPTION (TOP) P-23266C S-1-66 C Jan. 8, 1981 A heavily cratered surface is apparent in this photo of Saturn's satellite Tethys, taken Nov. 12, 1980, by Voyager 1 from a distance of 570,000 kilometers (354,000 miles). Other photos of Tethys showed the opposite hemisphere, dominated by what appears to be a large impact crater or hill. Tethys is about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) in diameter and is composed largely of ice. Voyager 1 made its closest approach to Saturn Nov. 12, 1980, and is now en route out of the solar system. Voyager 2 will make its closest approach to Saturn Aug. 25, 1981, and will then continue on toward Uranus. It will arrive at that distant planet in January 1986. The Voyager Project is managed for NASA by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. #####
