Deep Impact

Deep Impact is a NASA Discovery mission scheduled for launch in January 2005. The primary objectives of Deep Impact will be to rendezvous with comet P/Tempel 1 on 4 July 2005 and launch a 370 kg copper projectile into the comet nucleus, excavating a crater and ejecting pristine comet material into space for analysis from the spacecraft and Earth-based observatories. The Deep Impact spacecraft will be equipped with two cameras and a mass spectrometer.
