The SMART-1 (Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology 1) is an ESA mission consisting of a lunar orbiter designed to test spacecraft technologies, primarily a solar-powered ion thruster, for use on future missions. SMART 1 is scheduled to launch on 3 September 2003 and study the Moon from lunar polar orbit.
