Stardust is a NASA Discovery sample return mission which launched on 7 February 1999. The primary objectives of Stardust are to fly by comet P/Wild 2 and collect samples of dust and volatiles from the coma of the comet and interstellar dust using an aerogel system. Stardust will encounter P/Wild 2 on 2 January 2004 and the samples will be returned to Earth on 15 January 2006.
