The Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) [1] is an online database of
descriptive information about atmospheric, geological, hydrological,
geophysical, oceanographic, environmental, and other Earth science
data sets.  Queries to the GCMD database can be made using the WWW
through either a forms-based interface or a free-text Z39.50 (version
2) search and retrieval protocol.  Retrieved data set descriptions may
be viewed in HTML Directory Interchange Format (DIF), Federal
Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital
Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM), or Government Information Locator System
(GILS) format.  The GCMD offers direct hypertext links to data centers
and/or the data itself via URLs.  The GCMD also hosts the CEOS
Interntaional Directory Network (IDN) Home Page.  A prototype
distributed search system and new DIF-writing WWW-based software tools
will also be demonstrated.
