CDAW 6-7 S/C Brief Help Descriptions


DMSP-5D-F2 (77-044A)

Polar Geocentric,T=102 m,Perigee / Apogee=811 / 869 km. USAF meteorological s/c. Visual/IR imagery, IR, X-ray, plasma, electrons, and RF ionospheric monitor. Data for 6A/B are precipitating electrons 51 eV to 20 keV (16 channels), and s/c geographic/magnetic location.
Resolution = 3 s.


ESA GEOS 2 (78-071A)

Equatorial Geostationary,T=23.9 h, Perigee / Apogee=5.59 Re / 5.62 Re. For IMS (International Magnetospheric Study). Spin: 10 rpm. To measure dc and ac E and B fields; plasma; energy and angular distribution of energetic electrons and ions.
Events 6A and 6B


GOES 2 (77-048A)

Equatorial Geostationary,T=23.9 h, Perigee / Apogee=5.53 Re / 5.69 Re, Launched 16 June 1977. To measure the geomagnetic field from a geo-synchronous orbit.
Data for events 6A and 6B.


GOES 3 (78-062A)

Equatorial Geostationary,T=24.01 h, Perig / Apogee=5.57 Re / 5.76Re, Launched 22 May 1981. To measure the geomagnetic field from a geo-synchronous orbit.
CDAW-6 has magnetometer data for events 6A and 6B.


GROUND BASED Observations

Most of CDAW 6 and 7 ground based data are related to geomagnetic field values, variations, and indexes; and riometer data. Some are from chains of stations.
CDAW 6A has 5; 6B has 6 ground-based data sets; CDAW 7A and 7B each have one.


IMP-8 (73-078A, IMP-J)

Geocentric, T=12 d, Perigee / Apogee=22.1 Re / 45.3 Re, During CDAW 6: located in Solar Wind, 12 Re ahead of dawn Bow Shock. During CDAW 7: at dawn Bow Shock. Observed energetic particles, plasma, and B-field parameters to compare with other s/c.
CDAW 6 has plasma and B-field data. CDAW 7 has plasma data.


ISEE 1 (77-102A, Mother)

Geocentric, Period=57.4 h, Apogee=21.7 Re. During CDAW 6: -6 to -20 Re in central tail. During CDAW 7: -20 Re in central tail. To measure E- and B-fields and low-energy particle fluxes in the Solar Wind, Bow Shock, and outer magnetosphere with ISEE 2.
CDAW 6 and 7 have E, B, proton and electron data, for various Events.


ISEE 2 (77-102B, Daughter)

Geocentric, Period=57.6 h, Apogee=21.7 Re. During CDAW 6: -6 to -20 Re in central tail. During CDAW 7: -20 Re in central tail. To measure E- and B-fields and low-energy particle fluxes in the Solar Wind, Bow Shock, and outer magnetosphere with ISEE 1.
CDAW 6 and 7 have E, B, proton and electron data, for various Events.


ISEE 3 (78-079A, ICE, Heliocentric)

In the solar wind on Earth-Sun line at 254 Re from Earth during the CDAW 6 epoch.
CDAW events 6A and 6B have data on solar wind plasma and magnetic fields.


MODELS

CDAW-6 included a model by Olson and Pfitzer of the trapped particle population and effects of magnetic storms.


SCATHA (79-007A, STP-P78-2)

Equatorial Geocentric,T=23.6 h, Perigee=4.3 Re, Apogee=6.8 Re, Launched 30 June 1979, Measured E- and B-fields, and particle data over a wide energy range, at 4.3 to 6.8 Re.
CDAW 6A and 6B have E, B,plasma, and proton data.


TIROS-N (78-096A)

Polar Geocentric, T=102m, Perigee 846 km, Apogee=862 km, Atmosphere, weather, and near-earth space observations. Maintained earth-pointing within 0.1deg.
CDAW 6A,6B have electron data for energies > 30 keV and >300 keV and for total precipitating energy > 1 keV.


76-059A (76-059A)

Eqtrl Geostatnary,T=23.9 h, Perigee=5.64 Re, Apogee=5.64 Re, CDAW 6 and 7: *************LT. To measure high and low energy electron, proton and alpha particle fluxes from geostationary orbit.
Data for CDAW 6 Events 6A and 6B, and CDAW 7 Event 7B.


77-007A (77-007A)

Eqtrl Geostatnary,T=23.9h Perigee=5.64 Re, Apogee=5.64 Re, CDAW 6 and 7: midnight-dawn LT. To measure high and low energy electron, proton and alpha particle fluxes from geostationary orbit.
Data for CDAW 6 Events 6A and 6B, and CDAW 7 Event 7A.


79-053A (79-053A)

Eqtrl Geostatnary,T=23.9h, Perigee / Apogee=5.64 Re / 5.64 Re CDAW 6 and 7: *************LT. To measure high and low energy electron, proton and alpha particle fluxes from geostationary orbit.
