DE 1 (1981-070A)

Dynamics Explorer 1.
Polar Geocentric, Period=6.85 h. Perigee=568 km, Apogee=3.65 Re. Launched 8/03/81. With DE-2, measures interactive processes coupling hot plasmas in the magnetosphere and cooler ones in the ionosphere and plasmasphere.
CDAW-8 has auroral image, magnetic field and ion composition data.

 

DE-2 (81-070B)

Dynamics Explorer 2
Polar Geocentric, Period=98 min. Perigee=309 km, Apogee=1012 km. Launched 8/03/81, Re-entered 12/19/83. With DE-1 measures neutral composition, temperature, and wind, and plasma flow at feet of field lines.
CDAW-8 has E-field data for evnts A & D, and B-field data for event D.
 

GOES 2 (77-048A)

Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 2
Equatorial Geostationary, Period=23.9 h. Perigee=5.53 Re, Apogee=5.69 Re. Launched 16Jun77. To measure the geomagnetic field from a geosynchronous orbit.
During the CDAW-8 events, the spacecraft was located at 107.9 degrees W.
CDAW-8 has magnetometer data for events A to C.

  

GOES 5 (1981-049A)

Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 5
Equatorial Geostationary, Period=23.9 h. Perigee=5.60 Re, Apogee=5.61 Re. Launched 5/22/81. To measure the geomagnetic field from a geosynchronous orbit.
During the CDAW-8 events, the spacecraft was located at 75.5 degrees W.
CDAW-8 has magnetometer data for events B and C.

 

GMS 2 (81-076A)

Geostationary Meteorological Satellite 2
Equatorial Geostationary, Period=23.9 h. Perigee=5.61 Re, Apogee=5.61 Re. Launched 10Aug81, turned off in September, 1984. To monitor high energy electron, proton and alpha particle fluxes from a geostationary orbit. The satellite was spin-stabilized with a despun earth-pointing antenna. The satellite was positioned near 140 degrees E and was designed to operate for 5 years.
CDAW-8 has 2-min electron and proton count data for events A-F.

  

IMP-8 (1973-078A) (IMP-J)

Interplanetary Monitoring Platform 8
Geocentric, Period=12 d. Perigee=22.1 Re, Apogee=45.3 Re. Launched 10/26/73, currently operational. To measure energetic particles, plasma and magnetic field parameters at 30-40 Re for comparison with other s/c.
CDAW-8 has ion and electron and magnetic field data for events A-F, and plasma data for events E and F.

  

ISEE 1 (1977-102A) ("Mother")

International Sun-Earth Explorer 1
Geocentric, Period=57.4 h. Perigee=281 km, Apogee=21.7 Re. Launched 10/22/77, Re-entered 9/26/87. To measure electric and magnetic fields, low energy particle fluxes in the solar wind, bow shock, and outer magnetosphere with ISEE 2.
CDAW-8 has much E- and B-field, and electron and proton data for various events.

  

ISEE 2 (1977-102B) ("Daughter")

International Sun-Earth Explorer 2
Geocentric, Period=57.6 h. Perigee=280 km, Apogee=21.7 Re. Launched 10/22/77, Re-entered 9/26/87. To measure electric and magnetic flds, and low energy particle fluxes in the solar wind, ow shock, and outer magnetosphere with ISEE 1.
CDAW-8 has E- and B-field, and electron and proton data for events A-F.

 

ISEE 3 (78-079A) (ICE)

International Sun_Earth Explorer 3
International Cometary Explorer
Magnetotail, Period=. Perigee= , Apogee=. Launched 12 Aug78, currently operational. To measure plasma, particle, and magnetic field parameters in the magnetotail between Earth and the Lagrangian L2 point.
CDAW8 has B-field, electron, proton, and ion data for events A-F, and ion data for events G and H.

CDAW-8 included terrestrial magnetic field models for comparison with data.

  

SCATHA (1979-007A) (STP P78-2)

Spacecraft Charging at High Altitudes
Space Test Program P78-2
Equatorial Geocentric, Period=23.6 h. Perigee=4.3 Re, Apogee=6.8 Re. Launched 6/30/79. To measure magnetic fields and particles data over a wide energy range, from 4.3 to 6.8 Re.
CDAW-8 has magnetic field, plasma and proton data for events A-D and F, and H+, O+ and electron data for A-C.

 

77-007A (77-007A)

Equatorial Geostationary, Period=23.9 h. Perigee=5.64 Re, Apogee=5.64 Re. Launched 06Feb77. To measure high and low energy electron, proton and alpha particle fluxes from a geostationary orbit.
During the CDAW-8 events, the spacecraft was located at 68.0 degrees E.
Data is supplied for CDAW-8 events A-D, and F-H.

  

82-019A (1982-019A)

Equatorial Geostationary, Period=23.9 h. Perigee=5.61 Re, Apogee=5.61 Re. Launched 3/06/82. To measure high and low energy electron, proton and alpha particle fluxes from a geostationary orbit.
During the CDAW-8 events, the spacecraft was located at 68.4 degrees W.
Data is supplied for CDAW-8 events A-H.

 

81-025A (81-025A)

Equatorial Geostationary, Period=23.7 h. Perigee=5.56 Re, Apogee=5.57 Re. Launched 16Mar81. To measure high and low energy electron, proton and alpha particle fluxes from a geostationary orbit.
During the CDAW-8 events, the spacecraft was located at 134.0 degrees W.
Data is supplied for CDAW-8 events A-H.

 

GROUND BASED OBSERVATIONS

There are many types of ground based data. Most of CDAW-8's ground based data are related to geomagnetic field values, variations, and indexes.
CDAW-8 has several ground based data sets for each event.
