Evolution of the brightest region of Comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9
Hubble Space Telescope images showing the evolution
of 4 fragments, known as the "Gang of Four," of
Comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9. The first image was
taken 1 July 1993. The second image,
taken 24 January 1994 shows separation between
the two brightest fragments and also the faint
fragments. Finally, on 30 March 1994, the faintest
fragment is barely visible and the second faintest
fragment has split into two. The fragments impacted
Jupiter 16-22 July 1994.
