Mimas - Voyager 1

Saturn's satellite Mimas and Herschel crater

Mimas
Voyager 1 image of Saturn's innermost major satellite Mimas from 550,000 km. The 100 km diameter crater Herschel dominates the image. The crater centered at 2.9 N, 109.5 W. is a quarter the diameter of Mimas itself. It is believed that the impact which formed this crater was almost large enough to destroy the satellite itself completely. North is at 11:30, the equator runs from 8:30 to 2:30. The resolution is approximately 5 km/pixel. (Voyager 1, FDS 34932.04)
