Mathilde - NEAR

Close-up of Mathilde

Mathilde
This image of main belt asteroid 253 Mathilde was taken by the NEAR spacecraft from 1200 km shortly after its closest approach on 27 June 1997. The frame is about 20 km from top to bottom and the lighting is from the lower right. Impact craters ranging in size from 30 km to less than 0.5 km are visible. These point to a violent history of impacts on Mathilde. Mathilde is estimated to be 50 x 53 x 57 km in dimension. Roughly 60% of the surface was imaged by NEAR and five craters larger than 20 km in diameter were seen. (NEAR Mathilde 199706271300)
