Earth - NEAR

Saudi Arabia from 685 km

Earth
Shortly after its closest approach to Earth on 23 January 1998, the NEAR spacecraft passed over Saudi Arabia and took this black and white image southwest of Riyadh from an altitude of 685 km. The dark circles appear to be center-pivot irrigated agricultural fields. The cloud at the bottom of the image may be a jet contrail. The frame is 27 km across, the resolution is about 70 meters, and the view is to the southwest. (NEAR Earth 199801230730)
