B/W 16-mm Movies of Hurricanes Abby, Brenda, and Candy in 1968

Availability: Data Accessible Elsewhere

Time span: 1968-06-03 to 1968-06-23

This 16-mm silent movie was produced for NASA by the Satellite and Mesometeorology Research Project of the University of Chicago. The movie consists of approximately 30 minutes showing time of b/w cloud photography with superimposed color annotation and geographic grids for selected storms observed during the 1968 NASA-ESSA joint hurricane watch experiment. The film shows satellite views of hurricanes Abby (June 3 to 6, 1968), Brenda (June 21, 1968), and Candy (June 22 to 23, 1968). These storms are depicted in a series of individual time-lapse cloud pictures as observed by the ATS 3 Multicolor Spin Scan Cloud Camera (MSSCC). Each film sequence is made up of individual pictures, each requiring approximately 20 minutes of scan time to produce. In a single day (10 hours of observations) about 32 individual pictures arerecorded. Since a single sequence has a viewing time of 2 sec or less, each sequence is repeated 4 to 5 times to allow for interpretive viewing. Both full disc and close-up film sequences of the hurricanes are presented. The upper-level wind field is revealed through the cloud motion depicted in these short film sequences. This movie (NASA release no. 69-812) is available for viewing at NSSDC and may be obtained at cost from the National Audio-Visual Center, Suitland, MD.
