SDDPT Mariner 9 IRIS Reduced Archival Data on CD-WO

Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)

The input data for this CD volume were originally archived on 7-track magnetic tapes containing Mariner 9 IRIS (reduced archival data). The magnetic tapes were, in most cases, at least 15-24 years old. Accompanying each tape on the disc, there is a log file which documents SDDPT processing history. This CD volume holds tapes ARC-900 to ARC-916. The file ARC_INFO.TXT located on the CD, correlates the tape ID with descriptions of the tapes' contents.

The 7-track data in this dataset was padded. The 6 bit characters were padded to 8 bits by placing zeroes into the 2 high order bits (1 blank bit and 1 parity bit). Each CD-ROM disc has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchangen Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs).

This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. Persons interested in ordering these data should contact the NSSDC person listed for this data set.

This is SDDPT data set code 71-051A-0012, volume ID M71_2101.
