SDDPT Mariner 9 Ultraviolet Spectrometer Experiment Data Record on CD-WO

NSSDCA ID: PSPA-00180

Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)

Description

This data set holds the Mariner 9 Ultraviolet Spectrometer Experiment Data Records (EDR's) on CD-WO. The CDs were created as part of NASA's Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT). The EDR's hold measurements of UV radiation (1100 to 3520 A) from the surface and atmosphere of Mars in the form of intensity values as a function of wavelength. The input data for this CD volume were originally archived on 157 7-track magnetic tapes which were copied directly to the CD's. The 7-track data in this dataset was padded. The 6 bit characters were padded to 8 bits by placing zeroes into the 2 high order bits

The file UVE_INFO.TXT is located on each CD in the series. It correlates the tape ID with available descriptions of the tapes' contents. Accompanying each tape on the disc, there is a log file which documents SDDPT processing history.

The complete set of UVS EDR and SEDR final data have been processed through UVS SAP - a program which would: 1) Average the data in specified bands of individual spectra and output to printer and mag tape (BAN tapes, location unknown), or 2) correlate UVS spectra and SEDR data, interpolating if necessary and output spectra and SEDR data to printer and mag tape (MRG tapes, SDDPT dataset code 71-051A-0069.) A special feature of this program was the capability to validate the DAS times associated with UV spectra received in real-time and correct them if necessary. The products of this process are the UVS SAP tapes, SDDP dataset code 71-051A-0053.

This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. Persons interested in ordering these data should contact the NSSDC person listed for this data set.

This data set is SPDSS ID 71-051A-0022, volumes M71_1001 - M71_1002
