This data set (326A) resides on a series of CD-WO volumes and contains Apollo Project Tapes. The Apollo tapes consists of time sequenced 7 track Apollo Project Data, expected to be valuable for future research purpose. The tapes are in most cases at least 20-25 years old. The 7-track data in this dataset was padded. The 6 bit characters were padded to 8 bits by placing zeroes into the 2 high order bits. While conducting the inventory, the SDDPT staff identified two methods for locating data on the tapes: use the start/stop time fields. The data was apparently recorded by hours/minutes/seconds, but not modulated into days, so the number of hours exceeds 24, or use the Ground Elapsed Time (GET) which contains the number of seconds elapsed since lift-off. This is generally a six digit number.
The file APL_INFO.TXT is located on each CD in the series. It correlates the tape ID with available descriptions of the tapes' contents and the tracks. In order for the user to locate a particular file on the appropriate CD volume, he or she can check the jewel box backliners to determine the input tapes used to create the particular CD, or consult the APL_INFO.TXT file on the last CD volume in the series. Accompanying each tape on the disc, there is a log file which documents SDDPT processing history. Therefore, if problems were encountered while recovering the data from tape, they will be documented in the log file. (The SDDPT is not reformatting the data). However, it has been made readable in standard ISO 9660 format on the compact disc useable on a variety of platforms.
In general, these data are stored at NSSDC for archive, not distribution, purposes. The data are not always in a readily accessible form. In order to request this data, please talk to the NSSDC contact person listed for this data set.
This is SDDPT data set code 326A, volume IDs APL_2001 - 2005.
