SDDPT Mass Spectral Data on Surveyor MDL Reacquisition Files

NSSDCA ID: PSPG-00228

Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)

Description

This data set contains Surveyor Mass Spectral Data from the Surveyor 5, 6 and 7 Alpha Scattering Surface Analyzer in the form of Surveyor MDL Reacquisition Tapes. The data have been copied from 7-track magnetic tapes onto CD-WO as part of the Science Digital Data Preservation Task. The data were copied from a collection of tapes that, in most cases, were at least 15-20 years old. The 7-track data in this dataset was padded. The 6 bit characters were padded to 8 bits by placing zeroes into the 2 high order bits. The file 1_INFO.TXT is located on each CD in the series. It correlates the tape ID with available descriptions of the tapes' contents. Each CD-ROM disc has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs).

This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. In general, these data are stored at NSSDC for archive, not distribution, purposes. The data are not always in a readily accessible form. In order to request this data, please talk to the NSSDC contact person listed for this data set.

This is SDDPT data set code 66_045Z_0003, volume ID SUR_4101.
