SDDPT Mariner 9 IRR Reduced Data-Save Tapes on CD-WO

NSSDCA ID: PSPG-00632

Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)

Description

This data set contains Mariner 9 IRR Reduced Data-Save Tapes copied directly onto CD-WO. The data are in the form of surface brightness temperatures for given times and latitudes/longitudes on Mars. See the experiment description for more information.

Accompanying each tape on the disc, there is a log file which documents SDDPT processing history. The input data for this CD volume were originally archived on 9-track and 7-track magnetic tapes. No data could be read from the 7-track tapes. This CD contains the contents of tapes (9-track) IRR_920 to IRR_927. The file IRR_INFO.TXT located on the CD gives the tape ID with a description of the tapes' contents. The tape descriptions were obtained from the exterior tape labels and available information contained in the MIPS On-line tape database. More detailed descriptions may be available from the analysts' catalogs. Each CD-ROM disc has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs).

This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. Persons interested in ordering these data should contact the NSSDC person listed for this data set.

This is SDDPT data set code 71-051A-0055, volume ID M71_2001.
