This data set contains the level 2 observations made by the NEAR X-Ray Spectrometer and Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (XRS/GRS). The XRS Level 2 data products in this archive include daily time series of spectra collected by the instrument along with selected spacecraft engineering and instrument configuration and orbital ephemerides. Supporting documentation is included for the specifics of how these data were generated. A supporting BROWSE facility was included to facilitate a high level overview of asteroid and solar flourescence activity, which is in the form of time and resolution correlated histographic images of fluorescence detection by the asteroid and solar pointing detectors. Asteroid surface coverage is included in the form of an image with six orthogonal views of the asteroid of counts collected by the asteroid pointing unfiltered detector.
The XRS Level 2 data product comprises the time series of the XRS instrument's science data in physical units. At each integration time the instrument Data Processing Unit (DPU) samples instrument spectra accumulated during the integration period a well as instrument and engineering configuraton information. The level-2 data are combined into integral products within a relational database and exported as an integral level-2 product. Each XRS record is comprised of the following logical data units: four 256-channel spectra (unfiltered, magnesium, aluminum, and solar), instrument and engineering housekeeping, ground derived data products, and orbital ephemerides.
The GRS Level 2 data products comprise the time series of the GRS instrument's science data in physical units. At each integration time the instrument Data Processing Unit (DPU) samples instrument spectra accumulated during the integraton period as well as instrument and engineering configuration information. The level-2 data are combined into integral products within a relational database and exported as an integral level-2 product. Each GRS record is comprised of the following logical data units: five 1024-channel spectra (sodium iodide, bismuth germanate, anti-coincidence, sodium iodide 1 escape, sodium iodide 2 escape), two 21 channel spectra (bismuth germanate 1 and 2 escape), instrument and engineering housekeeping, ground derived data products, and orbital ephemerides.
The data are in FITS files with attached FITS headers and detached PDS labels. The data directory has subdirectories for each instrument sensor. Files contain all data for one day. This volume has been formatted according to the ISO-9660 level 2 Interchange Standard. This volume does not contain any Extended Attribute Records (XAR). The data are divided into volumes which contain Eros orbit and Eros surface data. Total data quantity is 5056 Mb. The volumes containing each file, the PDS ID, and the date range covered (in the form YYYYDDD) are given below:
