Complete Lunar Long Period Seismic Event Catalog Text File, Including Deep Moonquake Identification

Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)

Time span: 1969-07-12 to 1977-09-30

The purpose of this catalog is to present users of the Apollo Passive Seismic Experiment (PSE) data archived in PSPG-00739 with a text-file listing of all seismic events observed on the long period components of the lunar seismic network, which operated on the lunar surface from 21 July 1969 through ALSEP termination on 30 September 1977. This collection contains the complete all-inclusive version of the PSE long period event catalog which combines all the earlier periodic iterations. The catalog was originally published in 1981 by the Galveston Geophysics Laboratory of the University of Texas at Austin, Marine Science Institute, as Nakamura, Y., G. V. Latham, H. J. Dorman and J. E. Harris, "Passive seismic experiment long-period event catalog, Final version, 1969 day 202 - 1977 day 273", 314 pp., Galveston Geophysics Laboratory, Galveston, 19 June 1981, and was later assigned a designation by the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (UTIG): UTIG Technical Report No. 18. This catalog has since been revised several times as new identifications of earlier unidentified events became available. The current complete version, updated on 2 October 2008 and again in December 2018 for minor revisions, is available in this collection as the ASCII text file named levent.1008c.dat.

The catalog file, levent.1008c.dat, presents events in chronological order where each record lists the following data and parameters for one event at one or more seismic stations: year; day of year; event start and stop times (UT); signal envelope amplitudes (Z component for stations 11 and 12, and Y component for all the other stations); availability of seismograms (playouts); data quality; comments; event type class; and deep moonquake identification.

This collection also contains several supporting files and documentation:

EvCatEntries.1008c.txt explains the format and the contents of the levent.1008c.dat file and describes the minor corrections applied in December 2018;

TimeErrorIntervals.txt lists timing error corrections that are necessary due to tape head wiring errors at Earth-based Range Stations;

Retired_A_List.txt lists the retired deep moonquake "A" numbers;

UTIGTR_0018.pdf is a copy of UTIG Technical Report No. 18, "Passive seismic experiment long-period event catalog, Final version, 1969 day 202 - 1977 day 273" by Nakamura et al. (1981, revised 2008) which explains the history of the events catalog and provides a brief discussion of the source PSE data; and

ReadMe.txt captures this collection description and provides a brief but current discussion of the source PSE data archived in NSSDCA data collection PSPG-00739.
