This data set comprises the Deep Impact Support Archives, with images and data on Comet Tempel 1 taken from the ground-based Keck I and Lowell observatories and the orbiting Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). The data set consists of four distinct PDS collections, one of mid-infrared images from the Keck I telescope, one of broadband images and photometry from the Lowell Observatory, one of IRAS images and one of IRAS photometry. The data in this data set support the analysis of the rotation period, dust environment, and size and albedo of the nucleus of comet 9P/Tempel 1 for the Deep Impact mission.
The first collection is PDS ID DI/EAR-C-KECK1LWS-3-9P-IMAGES-PHOT-V1.0 contained on CD volume DISA_0001. It contains 49 raw and reduced mid-infrared images of which 14 are comet 9P/Tempel 1 frames and 35 are standard star frames, obtained using the LWS instrument at the Keck I telescope. Images were acquired during the night of 21 August 2000, about 7.5 months after perihelion. Raw images are supplied as six-dimensional FITS image files, flattened, reduced images are supplied as two-dimensional FITS image files. This data set also includes photometric results as an ASCII table of mid-IR fluxes. Observations were made with filters centered at 4.8, 8.9, 10.7, 11.7, 12.5, 17.9 and 20.0 microns.
The second collection, PDS ID DI/EAR-C-LO72CCD-3-9P-IMAGES-PHOT-V1.0, is held on DVD volume DISA_0002, and contains broadband R images and derived on-chip differential photometry of comet 9P/Tempel 1 obtained by the Perkins 72-inch telescope of the Lowell Observatory during 2000 apparition. Data were taken with the Loral 2K x 2K CCD, the SITe 2K x 2K CCD, and the Navy TI 800 x 800 CCD. This data set contains 439 raw and reduced images of the comet, 698 raw sky flats, darks, standard star fields, and 268 reduced standard star fields. On most nights, Landolt standard stars were observed at several airmasses and with broadband VR filters to provide a measurement of the extinction and a means of obtaining an absolute calibration. de-bias, flatten, and calibrate the raw images. Raw and reduced images are supplied as FITS files with headers with detached PDS labels.
The third collection, PDS ID DI/IRAS-C-FPA-5-9P-IMAGES-V1.0, is held on CD volume DISA_0003. It contains radiance images and noise maps of comet 9P/Tempel 1 reconstructed from sets of Survey Scans at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns acquired by IRAS during months before and after its perihelion on July 9, 1983. For these data, IRAS was aimed at Tempel 1 and images were acquired at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns by the FPA. A detailed description of the reduction methodology is described in the explanatory supplement included with this data set. The radiance and noise images are provided as FITS files with attached FITS headers and detached PDS labels. The AO effective resolution data are provided as fixed-width, ASCII tables with detached PDS labels.
The fourth collection, PDS ID DI/IRAS-C-FPA-5-9P-PHOT-V1.0, is held on CD Volume DISA_0004 and contains 12-, 25-, 60-, and 100-micron photometry of the dust coma of comet 9P/Tempel 1 during the months before and after perihelion on July 9, 1983. The photometry was derived from reconstructed observations acquired by the Focal Plane Array instrument on IRAS. The aperture photometry data are ASCII tables with fixed-length records. One photometry table corresponds to one reconstructed, in-band radiance image. The PDS label includes the file name of the radiance FITS image used to derive the photometry.
