High Resolution (0.33 Sec) Magnetic Field Data from ICE for the G-Z Comet Encounter

This data set contains high time resolution magnetic field measurements from the Vector Helium Magnetometer on ICE made during the comet Giacobini-Zinner encounter. Each data record contains the date and time, and the 3 components of the magnetic field in spacecraft coordinates and the field magnitude (nT). The time resolution is 1/3 second most of the data and 2/3 second during the last 2 days. The coordinate system used for the magnetic field components is approximately the same as Solar Ecliptic since the spacecraft Z-axis was maintained within half a degree of perpendicular to the ecliptic. While the JPL program used to reduce these data eliminated most noise spikes, a small number remain in the data. Users should check for noise spikes when doing averaging or other analyses. There is no special flag for "bad" or missing data. Included in the documentation is a list of the times of occurrence noise spikes identified by scanning the 5 days of high resolution data at JPL, and a suggested scheme for eliminating them. This data set does not contain any spacecraft position information. Trajectory data for the ICE spacecraft relative to the comet are archived separately as data set 78-079A-00E. Data from the following other experiments on ICE for part or all of the comet encounter period are also archived: Solar Wind Plasma (78-079A-01R), Low-Energy Cosmic Rays (78-079A-03E), Plasma Wave (78-079A-07D), Energetic Proton (78-079A-08F), and Radio Mapping (78-079A-10D).
